〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Dipper Pines
CHARACTER AGE: 12
SERIES: Gravity Falls
CHRONOLOGY: post Northwest Mansion Noir
CLASS: nerdy sidekick
HOUSING: With Mabel Pines (Heropa 18)
BACKGROUND: Dipper’s wikia entry!
Gravity Falls follows the 12 year old Pines twins, Dipper and Mabel, as they spend their last summer as pre-teens in a shack somewhere in Northern Oregon with their mildly sketchy great uncle (grunkle). What at first seems like a boring summer vacation turns into a paranormal mystery when Dipper discovers a strange journal detailing Gravity Fall's various supernatural entities. [Gnomes amirite] As Dipper delves deeper into finding the author of the journal, he uncovers the secret history of Gravity Falls and finds that perhaps even his Grunkle Stan might be hiding something…
The core of Gravity Falls is Dipper and Mabel's sibling relationship. Though vastly different in personality, they're each others' best friends and confidants. The twins support each other in their various schemes, and put the wellbeing of their sibling above anything else… usually. Any squabbles they do have are short lived and at the end of the day, they always remember they love each other. They trust each other implicitly, as shown in the very first episode where Dipper ignores the journal's warning of, "TRUST NO ONE," instead immediately telling Mabel about his discoveries. Dipper only fails in his fraternal duties when trying to impress. He almost lost Mabel the perfect pig in his attempt to keep the girl of his dreams from dating someone else. Eventually, he puts Mabel's happiness above his own like a good brother and all is well. The one constant in Gravity Falls is that Dipper and Mabel trust and love each other.
Dipper's relationship with his Great-Uncle Stan (Grunkle Stan) is complicated. Dipper seeks Grunkle Stan's approval, yet doesn't fully trust him. This is exacerbated when it's discovered that Grunkle Stan has been keeping some fairly big secrets. Grunkle Stan in return sees a younger self in Dipper, and can sometimes be overly harsh and demanding. Grunkle Stan does love his great-nephew and wants the best for Dipper and Mabel
A recurring theme of the first season of Gravity Falls is Dipper's crush on the Mystery Shack's part-time summer employee, Wendy Corduroy. It's established early on that Wendy is far too cool for Dipper. They are currently good friends, with Dipper occasionally still doing dumb things to impress her.
Enter the handyman child, Soos. Soos and Dipper have a brotherly relationship, with Dipper often taking on the big brother role. Dipper will often take Soos on his many ill-advised misadventures, relying on his mechanical skills and ability to fix everything with duct tape. He can often become frustrated with Soos's immaturity, but appreciates the pure friendship Soos offers unconditionally.
Dipper's time in Gravity Falls has been eventful, to say the least. Notable events include the time he was possessed by Bill Cipher, a vengeful triangle demon, nearly killed his sister. Luckily, sibling love and tickles saved the day and the incident only strengthened Dipper and Mabel's bonds. Dipper has also undergone manliness training with the manotaurs that live in the woods surrounding Gravity Falls. His final test was to kill the Multi-Bear, but after discovering the Multi-Bear's love of BABBA, Dipper is unable to finish him since "he's really a nice guy." More recently, Dipper teamed up with the Regina George of Gravity Falls in order to hunt some angry ghosts and maybe make a new friend in the process. This new ally may or may turn out to be useful in the future.
PERSONALITY:
Like every other 12 year old boy, Dipper is awkward. His voice cracks, he sometimes glues things to his face, and he wants approval so, so badly. This can lead to Dipper doing things that go against his own and often Mabel's misgivings, often leading to humourous or dangerous situations. Dipper especially seeks to impress those in a position of authority, such as FBI agents and the mysterious author of the journal. The word 'fanboy' has been used to describe Dipper many times. Dipper's awkwardness was especially prevalent when he was trying to impress his crush, Wendy. He attempted to fit in with her teenaged friends and did the dangerous stunts requested of him so as to seem more mature. Luckily, he and Wendy have since settled into a comfortable friendship, and Dipper now only has the regular amount of pre-pubescent awkwardness.
Above all things, Dipper values his intellect. He considers himself the "Smart Twin," especially when compared to Mabel's exuberance. Part of his desire to decode the journal and unravel Gravity Fall's mysteries is the need to prove his intelligence. He can sometimes become jealous when Mabel, or even Soos, think of a solution before he does. Essentially, Dipper wants to be the smartest one in the room. Without his smarts, Dipper believes he doesn't have any other qualities to bring to the table. Add in the fact that Dipper likes to be prepared to the point of neuroticism, and he's often a little ball of anxiety. He once wrote a multi-page list of ways to woo Wendy, and brought dozens of disposable cameras on a monster hunting trip. While his overpreparedness can sometimes be helpful, often it stops Dipper from making actual progress, for example he couldn't comfortably converse with Wendy, and focused more on rescuing the cameras than actually looking for monsters. With the help of Mabel and his friends, he's slowly started to learn to relax when needed and to go with the flow.
The value Dipper places on his intelligence and his need to fit in tie into his self esteem issues. He never really got over Mabel being born five minutes earlier and has been playing catch up ever since. Though he loves Mabel with all his heart, he is jealous of the easy way she makes friends and her disregard for social mores. Mabel is comfortable everywhere, while Dipper isn't even comfortable in his own skin. The pressure Grunkle Stan puts on him to "toughen up" certainly doesn't help since Dipper has self admitted noodle arms. Also he sneezes like an adorable kitten.
POWER: fires a very weak laser from the birthmark on his forehead
kittens appear when he sneezes

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:
[Dipper hates not knowing all the information. Thus, his first mission is to gather up as much info as he can, and dissemble accordingly.]
Hey, everyone! Uh, Dipper Pines here. You probably don't know me yet since I've… just arrived and unless you're my sister who's known me literally since birth, we haven't met! I thought I'd just get a um.. feel for the place and hear what everyone thinks is important to know. Also who are the supervillains, maybe? Because I would like to avoid those. I doubt they're going to be nice enough to just announce themselves or whatever, so y'know, a heads-up would be nice!
Thanks and again, it's Dipper Pines!
How do I shut this thing-- Mabel! Where's the power button on this thing? Crap, how do I make it stop recording. MABEL!!
LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:
Far up, a kitten meows piteously. The tree isn't large, but Dipper guesses maybe even small things look pretty big to a kitten that tiny. The branches are at least nicely spaced, so it shouldn't be too difficult to get up there. Dipper resolutely rolls up his sleeves and approaches the tree… only to sneeze. And as usual, a kitten appears. It promptly escapes up the tree, only to start meowing next to the other kitten.
Dipper slaps his forehead in frustration. The brown tabby and black kitten do not offer any support. Only more meows. Sighing, Dipper starts climbing the tree in earnest this time, eventually making it up to the branch in question. As he starts inching out towards the kittens, the tabby pats his face curiously and then turns to swish its tail in Dipper's face. Which, predictably leads to a sneeze. Or three. And more kittens. The tree branch now has more kittens than leaves.
The ground is looking very tempting right now. But Dipper Pines is not a quitter! He definitely does not have enough arms for all these cats, but his vest has pockets! Really big pockets! It's a Utili-Vest™! Plus if Mabel ever discovered he abandoned some kittens in a tree, she might lock him out of their room. ...On the other hand, this might be a job for the fire department. Do they even do the cat in a tree calls any more? They might have to answer a Dipper in the tree call since it's looking less likely with each passing moment (and sneeze) that Dipper's going to be able to make it down on his own.
FINAL NOTES: Dipper will be bringing his journal and a blacklight! Because they are always in his vest.
